Rep. John Lewis on Julian Bond

Lewis and Bond, co-founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s Civil Rights movement, faced each other in a close contest for an Atlanta-area U.S. House seat in 1986, with Lewis emerging victorious against Bond in a runoff and beginning his ongoing congressional career. Bond, after losing to Lewis, resigned from a long career in the Georgia Senate over drug use accusations and hosted America’s Black Forum on TV until 1998, when he became Chair of the NAACP.
