Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (US Army) was asked many questions by bored Taliban guards over the course of five years in captivity in Afghanistan prior to being swapped for captured Taliban fighters in 2014.
From the Telegraph:
Sgt Bergdahl, 29, fled his Afghanistan base in 2009 and was held by the Taliban for five years.
Now facing a court martial for desertion and misbehaviour, he has spoken to filmmaker Mark Boal, who produced The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and the interviews are being broadcast as part of the podcast Serial.
In the latest instalment he tells of how he twice tried to escape, and how the Taliban guards were curious about America.
“They ask you, is Obama gay and sleeps with men?” he said.
He also told of other questions asked by Taliban guards, such as “where US military bases got their prostitutes, alcohol and drugs, and were obsessed with American soft drinks” like Mountain Dew. He also told his two attempted (and failed) escapes.
Since his return to the states, he has been the subject of intense ridicule and suspicion among U.S. nationalists for allegedly joining the Taliban of his own volition.
