Today in History w/ Louie Clay

Forty-two years ago this month (November 1974), COLLEGE ENGLISH became the first main line academic journal in any discipline to publish an issue about lgbtq issues edited by and written by out lgbtq academics. Rictor Norton had found sanctuary in London and I fully expected to be fired. Both of us survived and continue to write extensively. I have great respect for Fort Valley State University for not only retaining me but approving me for tenure: as an embattled and small historically African American institution, they did not need the new jeopardy I brought to them but took it in stride, more professionally and graciously than did the University of Wisconsin and Rutgers University, my employers that followed them.
