SAVE YOUR TEARS: Anti-LGBT Nations Offer FAKE Condolences to #Orlando

In the spirit of GetEQUAL’s dragging of homophobic U.S. congressmembers for their unjustified, useless condolences, let’s look at the countries offering condolences to Orlando which have anti-gay sodomy laws or criminalization of freedom of expression for LGBT people.

Seriously, they range from fines to imprisonment to torture to execution. But yet, they offer condolences and absolutely DO NOT MENTION THAT QUEER FOLKS WERE TARGETED.

DRAG the Hypocrites: #GetEQUAL Reads anti-LGBT Politicians for Hollow #Orlando Condolences

When GetEQUAL is lit, they’re on fire.

The fine folks at this organization called out politicians left-and-right yesterday on Twitter for voting records, fundraising, and speaking engagements with anti-LGBT allies, specifically the Family Research Council. Almost all of 28 incumbent senators and 29 congressmembers called out have 100% voting records with the FRC.

Let’s read the grouped-by-state receipts, shall we?

Don’t Whitewash the QPOC Victims of #Orlando

Right now, the ethnicities of the 50 people killed at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando are being erased from the conversation.

They were predominately Latino and/or of African or Afro-Caribbean descent.

Few queer people of color have been interviewed by major news media outlets. Faisal Alam, a queer Pakistani-American LGBT rights activist of Muslim religion, is one of those few.

And what’s worse: the fact that they were predominately LGBT, that this was a gay nightclub, that this was a hate crime, is also being whitewashed in some outlets, like Sky News in the UK:

This bears repeating: The first victims of Orlando were Latino. The majority of victims were Latino and/or African-American. Almost all of the victims were queer. And Pulse is a gay nightclub.

Never Forget This. Queer People of Color were mass murdered on Sunday, 11 June 2016, and were killed because they were queer. Don’t whitewash this.

I enjoy myself at ‪#‎SOBSFCon‬ in Atlanta. Talk about it on video.

I go to sleep. Then a queer nightclub in ‪#‎Orlando‬ is massacred by a religious bigot gunman. During Pride Month.

Then I wake up.

What can I feel about this?

It’s only starting to sink in that people were sitting ducks, enjoying themselves in their vulnerability to each other, and someone just took advantage of that vulnerability to end their lives.

It’s a betrayal of that honesty of the close, inclusive quarters.

His father blames it on seeing two men kissing.

How can someone be so disturbed by such vulnerability that they seek to kill those who show it on such a grand scale?

That is, unless they are carefully taught or teach themselves to see such vulnerability as inhuman, as not fitting the “proper roles” of human beings. And, like cowards, seek to “perfect” the world by eliminating the “improper” people.

But that is not just. It is irrational, insipid, arrogant, and monstrous. It can emanate from anywhere for any reason or motive, but will carry out death and destruction all the same.

Sometimes, there is no justice. Not against such a monstrosity.

But, at the bottom of Pandora’s box, there is hope. There is always hope.

DEVELOPING: Victims of #Orlando #PulseShooting

The list of the 49 victims of the #Orlando shooting continues to be updated with names, ages and even occupations. They worked in the widest variety of occupations, came from predominantly Latino and African descents, and were mostly LGBTQ.

It is because of that last aspect that their lives were taken on Pride Month.

LOWNDES COUNTY: South Georgia Pride Reports Bashing of Transgender Woman

From Raynae Jones of South Georgia Pride, Inc. in Valdosta:

On Valentine’s Day a transgender woman of color was brutally attacked by 3 men. This attack occurred in Lowndes County, GA. Livian was beaten for over an hour, was held at gun point, and sexually assaulted.

As the result of her attack she has a broken eye socket, fractured jaw, punctured and collapsed lung.
Only one of her attackers has been arrested and some of the charges were dropped. It is unclear when the other two people involved in this attack will be arrested.

South Georgia Pride has been in contact with the victim and has been working directly with her to get in contact with resources that can possibly help her with legal assistance, payment of medical bills, therapy, navigation of communication with the police, etc.

So far Lambda Legal, Atlanta Pride, & HRC has contacted Raynae’ Jones about the case and on how to contact Livian. Phone calls and emails have been made to Southern Poverty Law Center, The Health Initiative, Southerns on New Ground (SONG) , and SNaP Coalition.

All of the South Georgia Pride Board members are committed to helping Livian and we are using our network and resources to connect her to the organizations that specialize in those areas that will help her. South Georgia Pride is a 501c3 Non Profit with our main mission of hosting the annual pride festival in Valdosta, GA[.]

We also respect and want to uphold the dignity of Livian as she goes through this very traumatic time physically and mentally.
